1. Get organized

The number one complaint most couples share is a difference in cleanliness and organization: one is often tidier than the other.

If you're the type of person who doesn't notice socks on the floor or when the dishwasher needs emptying, then make an effort by setting yourself a chore window once or twice a day. Scan the house and check if you've left a mess that ought to be cleaned up. And then do it! By setting a time and doing it, you'll know that you're contributing to the household.

Likewise, if you can't bear to see clutter, tell yourself it's okay to let things slide for a day. You want to avoid feeling like you're doing all the chores yourself. If that does start happening, stop, take a breath, and talk to your partner about how they can help you. This isn't a nag, so try this language:

"Hi Cutie! The washing machine needs to be loaded, and our lunch stuff needs to be cleared away. While I sort out the washing, can you clean the worksurfaces? I'll meet you on the couch in 10 minutes when we're done!"

2. Communicate, cOMMUNICATE, COMMUNICATE!

It's popular advice for a reason - because that's how important it is! Keep those lines of communication wide open. Share your thoughts, feelings, and even the little things that make your day. A good chat can clear up misunderstandings, strengthen emotional bonds, and create a deeper connection.

Also, keep in mind - timing matters. Avoid heavy discussions when either of you is stressed, tired, or busy. Find a quiet, comfortable space where you can talk without distractions. Creating a conducive environment enhances the quality of your communication. In fact, we recommend setting aside time for regular check-ins about your relationship. Discuss your feelings, expectations, and any concerns you might have. This proactive approach helps address issues before they escalate and fosters ongoing emotional intimacy.

3. DON'T TAKE THEM FOR GRANTED

In the daily routine of shared spaces and familiar faces, it's all too easy to let the comfort of routine blind you to the extraordinary person beside you. Expressing love shouldn't be reserved for special occasions; it's a daily celebration. If it's your thing, make a point to say 'I love you' at least once a day.

However long you've known each other, there is always something new to learn. Print out this list of questions and answer them one at a time. Make sure to listen to what your partner says, and before you know it, you'll be sharing facts and stories about every part of your life!

4. Get Creative

It's easy to fall into a comfortable routine, and while there's nothing wrong with that, you should mix it up every once in a while! Make time for fun, exercise, and relaxation

For fun, commit to something big like watching all the Marvel movies in chronological order, rewatching all of ER, a 5,000-piece puzzle, or trying out knitting.

For exercise, commit to a two-week or 30-day challenge that you can complete together. The Thrillist has a great no-gym-needed program, and Pamela Reif has a detailed YouTube series that you can follow.

For relaxation, you can listen to music or sign up for daily meditation. Headspace is a great app, but did you also know it has a free YouTube channel packed with videos to find something you and your partner can use together? You can also challenge your partner to learn reiki or reflexology and volunteer to be their test subject!

5. discuss finances openly and respectfully

Navigating finances as a couple can be a delicate dance, but it doesn't have to be scary. Begin by acknowledging that everyone has different money habits and histories. Approach the conversation with curiosity rather than judgment.

When facing financial challenges or decisions, maintain a calm and understanding tone. It's about finding solutions together, not placing blame. Celebrate financial victories, no matter how small. Whether it's sticking to your budget for the month or achieving a savings goal, acknowledging these successes reinforces your shared commitment.

Consider scheduling regular "Finance Dates" to discuss money matters openly and respectfully. During these dates, review your monthly budget together. Discuss not just the numbers, but the goals behind them. What are your short-term and long-term financial aspirations? Having a shared vision can strengthen your financial teamwork.
